To me a threshold question has to be:  are the database access 
credentials set up properly, and can you do a simple query 
with the beancounter tool, like:

   $ beancounter quote ibm

getting back something like:

[herrold
AT
centos-5 ~]$ beancounter quote ibm
Name                       INTL BUSINESS MAC
Symbol                                   IBM
Exchange                                NYSE
Date                                20080429
 ...

Once you know the database connection works, you can drill in 
further.
