i think having searchable archives would be of some benefit, but only if it is
used. sometimes i get the impression users prefer to post a question rather than
do the work needed to find the answer on their own.

if you are serious about being willing to manage and maintain the gt mailing lists
i suggest you contact raphael directly and make your pitch. between the two you
might be able to figure a way to provide the capability where ever the lists
wind up.
