I think you are absolutely correct about compatibility and version issues.  It took me quite a while to install and configure GT my first.  Then it took me more time to learn how to use GT and develop some systems, scripts, generate charts, etc... mostly due to compatibility and version issues as you mentioned.

A livecd would be great for GT and I'm sure it would allow people new to GT to get up and running fairly quickly and easily.  If I had spare time right now I would definitely be willing to help you on this... but I've been super busy with job and personal projects. :(  I would be willing to test any LiveCD if you do decide to create one, though.
